CONFERENCE DEBATE
October 28, 1922
The March on Rome
Relator
Giancarlo Restelli
What factors allowed a small movement like the fascist one (born in '19) to take power only three years later?
What elements favored a man, Mussolini, a former socialist, until recently anti-monarchist and anticlerical, in obtaining power in October of '22?
Why did the crown and the army play a fundamental role in the rise of fascism? What was the role actually played by the Vatican and the industrialists?
And then, fundamental question: was it a coup d'état or rather was it the liberal ruling class that "delivered" the government to Mussolini?
These are fundamental questions to understand the context in which the march on Rome took place.
